Butter a 2-quart baking dish
Trim the crusts from and cut into 1/2 inch cubes:
Spread the bread evenly into baking dish and scatter over the top:
Whisk together thoroughly:
Pour the mixture over the bread and let stand for 30 minutes, periodically pressing the bread down with a spatula to help it absorb the liquid.
Preheat the oven to 350
Bake an hour and 15 minutes until puffed and firm in the center. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.
