• Day 1 of 60

    Living with Arthritis

A few years ago, my father  was diagnosed with with Psoratic Arthritis, which is caused by an over-active immune system. After two years of trying to manage the pain through diet and alternative medicine, Bill started on a weekly shot of Enbrel. This drug has eliminated a large amount of the pain he was feeling.  He also takes fish oil daily for the Omega-3s and gets acupuncture once a month. At age 62, he can no longer run or play tennis the way he was able to just three years ago. As a result of the Enbrel, he is feeling better and able to do more physical activity. He even got a bike for his birthday last week. Bill is pictured above in the red shirt with his three children on his birthday.

     60 Day Mila Challenge

But what if a food could alleviate the pain and psoriasis? This is where I come in. I challenged my dad to commit to eating two scoops of Mila everyday for two months. I was pretty sure he wouldn’t go for it. He sees my mom drinking Mila in plain water and calls it “water torture,” and would probably rather continue taking Enbrel than changing the way he eats. Sometimes my dad surprises, like when I got his email response that said, “Thanks, for your support, I do appreciate it. Realistically, I won’t give up sugar, or white flour, completely. I know, I don’t have the willpower.” I promptly replied, “Is that a YES or NO to my challenge? You can make a smoothie everyday, no water torture.” He wrote back with a resounding “YES!” and started today. He is even coming with me to see Dr. Kate Tenney speak about the health benefits of Mila on May 3.

Usually parents feel proud of their children, but in this case the best word I can think of to describe how I am feeling is proud of my dad. I know this isn’t easy for him. I know taking Enbrel is the easier route. Changing the way we eat is not easy and especially as we get older. Bill agreed to cut back on white flour and sugar for these two months (maple syrup and coconut sugar are ok). I made him a big batch of Laura’s Power Bars for his birthday and emailed him this morning to remind him to START the challenge!

Yay Boppy!! I was over there on Monday and he had a Mila bar for a morning snack. But he told me to tell Sara that he dumped chocolate sauce all over it! He didn’t really! But I encouraged him to do this challenge, and see what happens, it wouldn’t hurt him. Good luck!!

  5. Colette Perachiotti says:

This is fantastic! I’m excited to track his progress. Maybe this will inspire my dad to go up to 2 scoops of Mila and stop taking so much Advil.
