Maybe you have seen this image floating around on various social media sights in the last few months. When I first saw the photo, it reminded me of strawberry soft serve. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. As it turns out, this pink sludge is what your fast food chicken nuggets/patties and even processed frozen nuggets are made from. Mechanically separated poultry is a paste-like meat product produced by forcing it under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue. Some sources say the meat is then soaked in ammonia in order to kill bacteria. Before it is formed into patties or shaped into cute little dinosaurs, artificial flavoring and fillers are added. I am not sure how accurate these facts are, but it is enough to keep me from buying or ordering any type of chicken nugget again. Below is a video of Jamie Oliver in which he demonstrates the process. Also this Snopes article seems to have the most up-to-date information.
